The International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA) is an organization of the world's forest and paper industry associations. The purpose and areas of activity for the ICFPA are as follows:
The ICFPA provides a forum for regular meetings for executives from the member associations to discuss issues of interest to the international forest and paper industry. Policy issues that the ICFPA (and its predecessor the International Forum of the Forest and Paper Associations (IFFPA)) has dealt with include mutual recognition of sustainable forestry standards, climate change, and the environmental preferability of forest products. The ICFPA doesn't deal with business promotion activities.
Applications are pending for accreditation for consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC), the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
At the April 2002 meeting, ICFPA members adopted a position against illegal logging.
At the UN conference on climate change (COP 6) in November 2000, members of the ICFPA issued a joint publication outlining the industry's position on Global Climate Change and held a joint press conference. In advance of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), ICFPA members are developing a joint publication on the sustainability of the forest and paper industry.
ICFPA is currently working with the UNFAO to harmonize definitions for recovered paper. This will permit the collection of improved global data in this area.
